Linoprint: Midsummer - Lavender

The paper on which this illustration is printed is heavy and of nice quality. The linocut is printed on mustard yellow, terracotta red and lavender grey paper.
After the illustration has been pressed I am adding handpainted details with a very thin paintbrush and bronzepowder.

Printing with a linoblock requires personal attention and time. Each print comes out differently so each print is unique. It is such a refreshing way to work with illustration like what we’re used to with digital printers.

This linocut design is inspired by the folklore Midsummer ceremonies in Europe.
It holds symbols of harvest and summer.

The priestess is wearing a crown of flowers and herbs, in honor of the abundant harvest we celebrate in nature and our gardens. We enjoy the days that are filled with light, opportunities and growth.
In one hand she is holding a solar wheel made of hay, in her other hand a harvesting sickle. The image is surrounded by blooming St Johnswort. This is one of the herbs that is connected to the traditions of the Midsummer Solstice and is harvested for her healing, protective and soul-lifting properties.

During the Midsummer Solstice we celebrate life. Our surroundings and each other. The sun is at it’s highest in the sky and shines light on issues and creates a clear overview and possibilities for growth.
Personally I find this a beautiful time to slow down and give attention to growth; both in nature around me, as mentally and spiritually.
